Weekend fun

This weekend was an absolute blast! I finished the long, hard, and very emotional week, waiting eagerly for Friday night to finally come, after trying but very unsuccessfully to have a nap, I waited until 8:30 pm to hit,  then I was finally picked up, loaded into the bus surrounded by people of another culture, language, and headed out.  After driving for about 20 minutes we pulled up to a log cabin lodge. That is when I got out of the freezing fogged up bus and looked up, I was presented with the most spectacular northern lights I have ever seen, it was stunning, bright, dancing up a storm, and changing colours. It was the most beautiful view I have ever seen of the aurora,  i spent the whole 4 hours outside, i walked down to the lake, i walked around the cabin, i went to all the balconies just to take in the view, i could have stayed there all night. I was even able to get a photo of myself with the lights and I am amazed with the results.  It would have been nice to meet people who spoke my language, I still had a blast though.

Getting home at 1 am, I showered then crawled into bed, where I then spent the next hour or so chatting with my Czech and African friend (time difference for the win) then zonked off to sleep.

The next morning I woke up, got ready, my new friend picked me up and we went to a craft market, the beadwork was stunning, the leatherwork was gorgeous, the skins of variety of animals were so soft, I wanted to buy it all! There were so many booths we walked around for awhile admiring all the creativity.

Today being Sunday my same friend picked me up and we went for a country drive, I’m trying so hard to see ptarmigans, I swear they are masters at hide and seek, they hid and I can’t succeed in seeking them.  After a beautiful country drive we hit up the dollar store to get some water glasses.  As we were leaving the store my friend receives a phone call that her husbands friends skidoo broke down and we had to go “rescue” them, we headed back to her house and got the truck, then we drove down the ice road to Dettah and after locating them, we put the truck in the position to be able to load up the skidoo, heading to the back, we pushed the skidoo up the snowbank and onto the truck bed, once it was strapped down we headed back to her house. Once that recuse mission was done, we began what we were trying to do in the first place which was glass etching craft. We etched designs into the glass using this chemical, and it will stay on forever! We didn’t finish the glasses quite yet so we will finish on Tuesday, this is definitly something I want to do when I get back home, it was such a fun last weekend up here in Yellowknife.

1 more week to go.

  1. Beautiful light display! Factoid: There is a tiny unincorporated town in eastern Alaska named “Chicken.”
Legend says it was named “Chicken” because the settlers couldn’t agree on how to spell “Ptarmigan!”
