I have arrived in Yellowknife!!!! I landed at 12:15 am and then got to my hotel at 01:30 and climbed into bed at 02:00 which is 05:00 am in Halifax time so I was awake for 23 hours with some cat naps on the flights. So I slept till 08:30 and was like nah ah this is not happening and forced myself back to sleep (which is hard to do) and slept until 13:30!!!! Now the hotel I have is basically an apartment, there is a kitchen, living room, bathroom and bedroom.
After checking the weather and seeing it is -43° with the windchill I got on my long underwear, my jacket, toque and mitts, then I headed out for the 2.5 km walk to the grocery store, it is beautiful here, the scenery is gorgeous. I walked on a trail, listened to the styrofoam sounding footsteps. I walked for most of the distance I walked through the woods, then across a lake, I was nervous that I could fall through the lake, however I told myself no no it is fine there are snowmobile tracks, as I was hesitating a man came by and went onto the lake, so I said to him “is this a short cut? Is this lake safe?” He just laughed and said “yes it is a very good shortcut and it is ice road safe.” So off I marched across the lake to my destination.
I have been told I don’t report to work until Monday morning so I have another day off tomorrow to relax and food prep. I am so glad that I have the ability to cook food at the hotel instead of relying on eating out all the time.
This hotel is a home base, when I met my point of contact last night at the airport I asked what we are going to be doing, and the reply was “I honestly have no idea” haha so I replied “so it is like ship where things constantly change and we never know what is happening, so ultra go with the flow mode needs to be activated?” The answer with a loud laugh was “ exactly!”
