Ice Fishing

Today was another good day I went ice fishing, I got picked up at my hotel and then we picked up three more people, after we had everyone we drove to the lake.  Once getting there we were directed into a shack, upon entering there were four auger drilled holes, we were given a fishing rod,  sat down on the bench and started fishing unfortunately the luck was not in my or anybody that had gone today’s favour and not a single one of us caught anything!  There were a couple close calls, and twice the rod lines broke, but nothing was caught long enough to bring up through the holes. The fish that we were trying to catch were Jackfish, and Lake white fish. We were all little disappointed, but we also knew that going fishing is not all about catching the fish.

The person sitting next to me, It was his birthday, so the fishing guide called the bus driver that picked us up and spoke in one of the East Indian languages and told him to go back to town and pick up a cake, so we all ate cake which was such a treat.

The guy said that there was a “toilet“ in the other shack, he said that it was a bucket with a toilet seat on it. So about halfway through the day, I had to go so I put my fishing rod down, got up, walked into the next shack. What now you know me I will use the washroom in pretty much any situation side of the road, in a ditch, in a mud puddle if I had to, any type of outhouse nothing really faces me. This however, was horrific.

To try to paint you the picture it was like an outhouse so it had a piece of plywood board with a hole cut in it and a toilet seat, it had Kleenex tissue, frozen all around the toilet seat the entire floor was yellow, ice, and there was what I would describe a frozen waterfall, completely yellow. After surveying this and deciding that this was not something I wished to partake in I walked back to the fishing shack and told them I guess I’ll have to hold it because that is absolutely disgusting. The guy just agreed with me and said yes it is.

We had a fish fry and the guide made us some inconnu fish that are native to the Yellowknife area. The fish tasted amazing. It did not taste like normal fish. It was not dry and had very very little to know fishy taste to it. It was excellent.

So after almost 4 hours of fishing, are we headed back to town. I was about to burst. I swear my eyeballs were swimming, and I got to the hotel was so excited that I ran to the elevator was dancing around waiting for the elevator to come got in the elevator, push the floor, weighted, jumping around in the elevator, got off the elevator pretty much rented my door tried to unlock it, and of course, the key did not work!  At this point, I was starting to really freak out that my pants and snow pants were not going to stay dry so I went back down the hall pushed the elevator button waited for it to come, got in the elevator, got to the main floor, got to the desk they reactivated my card. Had to wait like three minutes for that dancing around at the counter. Then he gave me my card back so I went back to the elevator, pushed the button waited for it to come, FINALLY it came, got in the elevator pushed my floor. Got to my floor ran this time to my door, unlocked my door had to peel off all my layers while dancing and hopping around, then ran into the bathroom. I made it thankfully. My, what time that was.

I’m pretty determined to catch a fish so I might try to go out again next weekend. We will see you though.

After I got back from ice fishing, I called up that new friend I met yesterday while dog sledding and asked if she wanted to hang out, She picked me up, we went to see the finished snow sculptures, then we went to the grocery store and picked up a rotisserie chicken, a salad, some buns and some ice cream. After that, we went to Walmart to buy a cribbage board.  After feasting on our meal we played a few rounds of crib, talking the whole time. She flies home on Tuesday so I’m grateful for the two days that I got to hang out and get to know her.  Who knows this world isn’t very big maybe her and I’ll cross paths again.
