Mother Nature’s sense of humour

Last weekend I was out for a walk with my dear friend.  We walked along the beach looking for sea glass and sand dollars. We got to this pass where we had to cross over, it wasn’t a big crossing only about 9 or so feet across.  It was not super deep up to about the knees.  I had ski pants on and boots and I was confident that I was not going to get that wet, so I committed and made it across.  My friend however was not dressed with ski pants and would have for sure gotten soaked.  So I convinced her (after many minutes of persuading her to jump on my back and make it across she finally agreed.  I put my phone down and my gloves and my beach combing collection bag down on the sand, and trudged through the water to the side I had just crossed. For the first time in my friends’ adult life she jumped on my back and we trudged through the water to make it to the other side. It wasn’t hard to bring her across, but rather it was more difficult to lift my legs high enough to clear the water.  We made it! We got to the other side and had a good laugh at the silliness of the situation, wishing we had someone there to video take it.

We continued along the beach collecting sand dollars and looking at the birds, boats and shells. Once we reached the end of the beach we made our way back knowing this crossing was coming again. During that time, the tide had gone out quite a bit more so we were figuring that the crossing would be a lot easier.  Sure enough when we got to the crossing the water was very shallow. We went further down and found a spot where there was a rock then a sand bar then the other side. Looked easy enough, we both thought it would have been an easy crossing.  I put my right foot on the rock and prepared to leap to the sand bar, my friend watching on encouraging me to give it a go.  So I bent down, took a breath and leapt………………I made it to the sand bar, but to my dismay it was not a sand bar! It was in fact quicksand…………………..instantly I sank down to my hip, and fell forward flat on my face. I hadn’t clued in yet what was happening therefore tried to stand up and recover, well let me tell you that there was no getting free I looked like a heard of cats trying to be the first one out of the water, I pushed up, fell down, pushed up, fell to my side, straightened up clawing the air for nothing but hoping it would help me get up, I fell flat in the water.  Once I clued into what was going on I slowed down and got my leg free and made it across. Soaked, full of sand, and disgruntled I stood on the other side and replayed the situation, it was then I burst out laughing, I met the eyes of my friend who was looking at me wide eyed she slowly smiled then started laughing too.  Once she found a different and safer way across we made our way to the car, changed clothes and proceeded to drive home, randomly bursting out at the events of the day.
